The 4F Model for Asking Great Questions

"If I tell you the answers they are mine to keep. If you learn the answers, they are yours forever."

A great transfer and facilitation tool is developing the ability to ask great questions and to lead your students towards the discovery of their own answers. Here is a simple 4 part framework for asking questions that will lead young people to their own conclusions. This enables them to learn from both their positive and negative experiences.

FACTS
Get all of the information out in the open.

Ask:
What happened?
What did you see? hear? think?

FEELINGS
When emotion is present, make sure they practice expressing it in a productive way.

Ask:
How did you feel about it?
Is this a good or a bad thing?

FINDINGS
Make every experience an opportunity to learn.

Ask:
What can we learn from this experience?
What can we gain from this?

FUTURE
Take what has been learned and turn it into more productive behaviors and smarter choices.

Ask:
How can we use/apply what we have learned?
What is going to be different the next time?

Practice this tool regularly and your students will start to look for learning opportunities even when they make mistakes.
