Tools for doing great work now.
Every student has a unique trajectory. Our goal as educators is to help them make positive developmental shifts that move their trajectory for long-term benefit. In order to help them shift, we need to be aware of their emotional state and employ tactics to mitigate fear of participation in the learning process. Here are three strategies for creating those positive shifts:
The goal is inclusion. Use lots of enrolling questions and handle the negatives. Be honest with both the opportunities and challenges of this time. When appropriate, share your own emotions and experiences. Being vulnerable and real will help create rapport and connection on a human level.
Use Project Based Learning and teaming to create a community approach to learning, This engages peer-to-peer capacities and will offer multiple ways for students to participate via large and small groupings.
When students are allowed to create, they also feel that they are adding value. People who add value, who help to shape the learning, who contribute to the process are more likely to take ownership for the outcomes. This is exactly where we want learners to be.
What do we have in common with fleas?
Maybe more than we would like to admit.
