Don't Compete, Just Win

Learn how to stack wins.

About this Module

When you reach certain levels of experience, knowledge, expertise and success, you often simultaneously develop blind spots. Things that you can't see. Things that only others can spot for you. You need to be challenged. You need to expose yourself, be vulnerable and ask others to engage with you in a relationship to improve one another. These relationships of trust and a commitment to learning will make everything you do more meaningful. You and everything that you touch will benefit.

Module: Last Dance with Competition

My obsession with winning and losing ended when I realized I couldn't win. It was glorious.

Part One: The Moment I Knew I Was A Loser

Here's a story i've been telling for years to my students. Its about 11 minutes long but I promise it doesn't suck.

Part Two: Practice Spotting

Answer some questions about your experience of that story.

  • FACTS
What was said that resonated with you?
    What did you find engaging/interesting?
    What details surprised you?
  • FEELINGS
How did you feel watching that?
How do you feel about your level of competitiveness?
How do you feel when you lose?
What's your favorite part of winning?
Do you agree with the "Don't Compete, Just Win" philosophy?
  • FINDINGS
What can we learn from this clip?
What was meaningful about the moment/story?
What's relevant in this to your work? Your personal life?
What have you learned from the way you compete?
  • FUTURE
How can you use what you have learned from this?
What can change about your approach to improvement? To competing?
What will you focus on learning?
What small habit do you need to focus on?

Part Three: Scoreboard

What's the score right now?

Imagine your life is a game. A game without external competition. Just Current You against the Best You . Give yourself a score from 1 (lowest) to 10. Where do you stack up with what you know is your potential?

Here are some areas to consider:

Family, Health, Happiness, Relationships, Wealth, Achievements, Creation, Personal Development, Skills, Mindset, Career, Entrepreneuring, Communication, Confidence, Awareness...

Add some of your own.

Part Four: Gaps Need New Habits

Practice makes progress.

Now. Take a look at the numerical differences between the Current You and the Best You. The differences are "gaps". These are your self-identified opportunities for improvement. You might be ok with some of them but I bet there are a few that bother you. Choose 1 right now that doesn't sit well with you. One that you still feel confident you could improve.

With that one as your focus, go ahead and document answers to the following:

  1. What am I doing that isn't working?
  2. Who can help me spot what I need to be doing differently?
  3. How much time and energy am I willing/able to commit to improving this?
  4. In the time that I have, what can I practice? How will I practice? How will I know if I'm improving?
  5. What specific habit am I looking to get rid of? What specific habit am I looking to develop in it's place?
  6. In my life, what will be better if I am able to make this improvement?

Optional: Deep Dive by ESPN

My experience with MJ in 1991 was just the beginning of his work to improve himself to become a lethal fade-away shooter. Guess I should have called ESPN then to give them a heads up.

Part Five: Get A Teammate

Work with an ally. Push each other to small wins.

Here are some things to discuss with an ally/coach:

Why specifically are you choosing them for support?

How do you want them to push you?

How do you want to be communicated with?

How do you like to receive feedback?

What tools can they use to help you stay motivated?

What's the best way to acknowledge your progress?

Thank you.

We hope you got value from this module. Please drop us a line with any comments and feedback.
